Position Overview:
The candidate will work primarily in the field, reporting to the Project Manager and Field Survey Technician (Party Chief). This role involves providing support to the Party Chief in all aspects of survey work throughout the construction season. They will work on a wide range of projects from land development and strata/air space work, topographic and rights-of-way surveys for infrastructure and capital works projects, construction and monitoring surveys, surveys on First Nation lands and many other diverse types of surveys.

The position is designed to offer valuable hands-on experience with engineering design principles, with the opportunity to transition into a design drafting role upon completion of the construction season. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing construction drawings and documents, as well as assisting in the coordination of design and specifications within a multidisciplinary design team. It is flexible for the successful candidate to work either from the Calgary or Edmonton office. 


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Set up and use a variety of surveying instruments such as total stations, GNSS receivers etc.
  • Assist Party Chiefs in preparation of field survey records.
  • Assist in organization and maintenance of survey equipment.
  • Clear vegetation and debris for measurements to be taken.
  • Follow all safety guidelines provided by Aplin & Martin.
  • Be a positive representative of the company to your co-workers, the public, and clients.
  • Prepare and develop designs for civil works, including engineering drawings for site plan applications, plan and profiles, report figures, etc.
  • Experience in land development, commercial and institutional practice areas.
  • Lead and assist in the development of designs specific to site grading and site servicing; sewers, watermains, roads, stormwater management and sedimentation and erosion control.
  • Experience and knowledge including an understanding of municipal, regional and provincial design guidelines and drawing requirements.
  • Ensure a complete understanding of project requirements and client expectations to aid in the successful completion of the work.
  • Contract specification document preparation including cost estimates.
  • Plan, organize and prioritize the project tasks under your responsibility in conjunction with others to maximize productivity and to effectively meet established guidelines.
  • Initiate and follow-up circulation to various agencies and work with appropriate authorities to establish relationships to gain speedy approval acquisition.
  • Mentor junior staff.


Skills and Qualifications:
  • A Civil Engineering Technology diploma from an accredited institution or a Survey/Geomatics Technology diploma is considered an asset.
  • Relevant work experience in survey and/or civil design/drafting is preferred;
  • Some work experience in a legal survey environment is preferred.
  • Experience with stormwater and water modeling software.
  • Proficient in using Excel, Word, AutoCAD, Civil3D, ArcGIS, and other computer programs used for preparing reports, presentations and designs.
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting and carrying survey equipment.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor settings and weather conditions.
  • Ability to work as a team member and take direction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Valid AB driver’s license.
  • Available to work out of town occasionally, and,
  • Availability of personal vehicle for business use (mileage will be compensated).
